How do Americans use phones

Mobile traffic continues to grow and over 62 percent of americans use smartphones already. There are of course great many of us still using phones to actually call or text people.


Comscore released data on US mobile subscriber market share with Samsung being the leading smartphone maker. Fastest growing smartphone is iPhone and the biggest and fastest growing platform is android.

How do we use our phones? In the same survey of 30,000 participants comscore learned that close to 76 percent of usage is on SMS text messaging. Coincidentally, it has been 20 years since inception of text messaging. First SMS was sent on Dec. 3, 1992 and it read “Merry Christmas.” Happy Birthday SMS!

Usage of downloaded apps grew by 1.9 percent in three months to 54.5 percent. Web browsing accounts for 52.7 percent. This number is climbing by 1.5 percent every three months. Some 27.2 percent of current web traffic is mobile trafic. 39.4 percent of subscribers also like updating their social networking sites. There are 34.1 percent of subscribers playing games and 28.7 percent listening to music.
