CPU Sales Slide
Microprocessor sales fell 15% worldwide in January compared with 2011 thanks to a number of factors which together reduced demand across a number of markets. Chinese New Year fell in January, whereas it occurred in February for the past four years.
The continued effects of flooding in Thailand on hard drive supply led to weak PC sales worldwide thanks to higher prices.
Mobile phone sales were also down. South Korean technology exports and Japanese microchip sales were also down. Korean handset sales fell 39% compared with last January, again partly as a consequence of the early Chinese New Year.
Strong car sales in December led to a slump in January, so chip demand was depressed in the automobile industry as a whole. Three-month sales figures for microchips for the period ending January were $22.7 billion, according to statistics published by the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS) organization. Sales are predicted to have recovered in February. Hard drive supply is still not expected to recover fully before Q3 2012.
