HyperSpace: An instant on operating system coming to Nettops

  • Sharebar

Here is another instant on OS for the nettops: Phoenix’s HyperSpace OS. Interestingly, it will be coming preloaded on nettops powered by the Intel Atom 230 or Atom 330 processors. HyperSpace is one of those most “Instant On” types of OS that are quicker to boot up and shut down than Windows XP. As expected, it comes with only  essential apps. The cost varies from $33 – $60 a year depending on what subscription you get.

According to Phoenix Technologies, HyperSpace “delivers instant-on, always-connected access to the Internet and key productivity applications such as HyperSpace Office Suite, Adobe Photoshop, Hulu, McAfee, Real Networks, Yahoo Search, etc.”

Hyperspace is an instant on OS based on Linux kernel. By a curious chance, I know it very well that there is no photoshop available for the Linux operating systems.

Does anyone actually use these instant on operating systems? I instead prefer to put my netbook in sleep mode instead of shutting it down completely.

With the newer, lighter desktop environments that the open source community is coming out with, stuff like this doesn’t impress. Agreed, they’ll juice it up with stuff like Photoshop, but for RGB editing, GIMP is equally good. Let’s face it, who does CMYK editing on a netbook?!

You must see the LXDE environment. They’re even coming out with a netbook launcher for it. Lubuntu is the Ubuntu variant using LXDE. The launch will probably coincide with the release of Karmic Koala. And you won’t need to pay the $30-60 annual fee.. :P

If Mr. Shuttleworth is to be believed, and he has never disappointed before, Karmic is sporting boot-times that will break records.

I am myself a user of GIMP and with the current update, I could not be more happier.

Unfortunately, that is not the case with everyone. GIMP cannot replace photoshop. Millions of graphic enthusiasts and graphic artists live and die by it and they just cannot afford to jump the ship.
