Why is Linux unable to take off? – How can Windows 7 affect Linux?

  • Sharebar

This is a topic that has been discussed trillion times on the Internet. Now, with Windows 7′s release right round the corner, it is important to know where the Linux OS goes from here.

ASUS was the first manufacture that revolutionized the world of netbooks. Their first netbook, known as EEE 701 ran Xandros OS, which is a Linux-based OS. The company was able to maintain low price for it as the Linux OS is free of charge, which helps the company to reduce the price of their netbooks.

After a while, Microsoft sensed that Linux may become a threat to them as these little machines were becoming incredibility popular and Linux netbooks had started to take away the share from Microsoft. This is when Microsoft started offering Windows XP at a shockingly low price of $25 to the netbook vendors. This wounded the growing Linux market and most the netbooks thereafter started to come with Linux on them.

Now, with the Microsoft Windows 7 to be released next month, the main question that arises is, whether the Microsoft will offer Windows 7 at the same rock bottom prices as it used to with the Windows XP OS.

Getting back to the topic, if the Linux OS really want to make itself big in the mass market, it will need the help of companies like Adobe and Corel. I am fully aware of the fact that Adobe once released Photoshop for the Linux few years back, but it no longer works on the current Linux distros. Adobe then said that the Linux market needs some more time to bloom. Now, a lot of users have now installed Linux as their secondary OS in their computers as it is fast, secure and free from Viruses.  It is the perfect time for all the big software vendors to take advantage of the Linux market.

Now, I am a huge Ubuntu fan and love ArchLinux, but we must chew the fact the manufactures are not doing enough to promote Linux. Some of them do sell Linux based netbooks along with the XP offerings, but commensurate advertising is not being done.
