TekNinja, I find lucid to be the fastest ubuntu ever. Not only it boots up very quicky, but it lauches app faster too. Also, don't forget that this is an LTS release which means better support

I installed 9.10 on a client's computer (March 26, 2010) which had been a dead Windows XP Pro(hard drive)and really enjoyed the Operating System. I fully played around with it while configuring the Restricted Drivers for the client. Ironically, I prefer to keepJ Juanty 9.04 on my personal laptop.

One thing I did not like was the removal of most of the really great Screen Savers found 8.10 Intrepid Ibex and Jaunty. But as the client was completely new to Linux this was not an issue. I am aware 10.4 is now available but I am recommending that the Newbie stick with 9.10 and really get the hang of Ubuntu before flipping to Lucid. I didn't notice any appreciable difference in Boot time and personally I think the issue is a overly nick picked and non issue.

I in stalled Ubuntu on a five year old Centrino laptop with full 2 GB RAM, faster hard drive and it turned into a super stable workhorse that I have used professionally for two years now to run an entire online retail shop administration, sales, and all sorts of editing and web access. Not once has there been any crash and the machine is just dead reliable and rather fast. I'm only now looking at replacing it with recent hardware but onlu Ubuntu could have given it the renewed lease of life it got when I got rid of its old XP environment.

I am not the only person reporting this problem: ubuntu 9.10 does not reliably detect blank or burned media in optical drives, especially in AMD multi-core CPUs.

I am having continuing problems with losing network connections that can only be resolved by rebooting (sound like Windows?).

And the notion of using IPv6 was stupid, can only be addressed by editing the config file as a super user (could the average computer user do that on their system).

Maxwell, I don't what problems you've been having, but I have installed XP on quite a few machines and always detected SATA drives without problems.

Ubuntu is nice but is not ready to move people off of Windows, I can't imagine getting my parents to use it. If the software isn't in the Ubuntu repositories, it is a hassle to install.

I am very impressed with Ubuntu in general considering that I fell into its arms as a result of Windows XP crapping out on me during the install phase. (XP can't see SATA hard drives).
I had a Jaunty LiveCD that came to Nairobi, KENYA from Holland in 1 week - amazing!!
I did the upgrade to Karmic Koala (9.10) and it was flawless. So, it appears that Ubuntu plays nicely with Toshiba Satellites. Mine is the L305-S5944 model with: Pentium Dual Core 2.16 Ghz chips, 2GB RAM, 250 GB Hard Drive, WIFI, SD Card reader, etc.
Like I said, Ubuntu detected EVERYTHING!!
If Linux keeps on improving like this, imagine where Desktop Linux will be in another year or 2.

i did not like the built in rhythmbox but totem is not bad.. just that u hav to configure it in text mode.. smplayer is also a gr8 choice for a video player.. in the new ION based netbooks u can use the nvidia VDPAU output to play 1080p videos seamlessly.. and that is something that vlc cannot give at the moment.. :D
