Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala Review
Ubuntu 9.10 is the latest Ubuntu’s release that brings in myriad of fixes and new features that make it the most user-friendly Linux OS ever made. GadgetMix.com spent quite a lot of time with the Alphas, Betas and the final release and we are impressed!
Installation
NOTHING has changed as compared to the previous releases. It is exactly the same as 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope. You can burn the ISO file to a CD or install via Flash Drive (which we prefer). To install via a USB flash drive, use Unetbootin (download here).
Note: You need to format it in FAT32 to properly boot it via USB
So what is new?
Other than the plethora of under-the-hood changes, there are many more cosmetic and new apps that have made their debut into the default Ubuntu environment
First thing that I noticed was the fact that it booted up quickly; quicker than 9.04. The new login screen looks much better than any OS out there, including the latest Windows 7. Clicking on the name brings up a text field to let you enter the password.
Ubuntu One
This is one of the new features that we liked. Ubuntu One is basically a (free) online storage based system. You can 2GB free and you can use it to store just about anything. If you need more storage, you will need to pay on an yearly basis for that.
Microsoft does not comes with cloud based storage app on the Windows 7. Yes, we are aware of the Live Mesh, but you won’t see any sign of it after Windows 7 installation. You have to manually download it. On the other hand, Ubuntu One is pretty well integrated into the OS and shows up as a drive :)
More Themes!
There are many new themes in the Ubuntu 9.10. I love the New Wave theme which has been shown in the screenshots above.
Ubuntu Software Center
Bulky and clunky application installer has been replaced by much more streamlined and user-friendly, “Ubuntu Software Center”. Installing an app was never so easy! Just select the category and you will get the list of apps associated to that category. Click on the app and select install. You can also remove apps in the similar way.
I did not like in built music player and movie player Ubuntu bundled it with, so I replaced them with Audacious2 (music player) and VLC (movie/video player).
You get OpenOffice to let you work with the Microsoft office files. 2007 formats ARE supported
GIMP is also bundled which allows you to create, modify graphic files. Photoshop’s PSD format is supported too
Internet
For Internet browsing, Firefox 3.5 has been included. You can also go for Opera which can be download from here. It is a DEB file which shall be downloaded just like any file and then be executed. It will install itself.
For email, “Evolution mail” has been included and for IM, Empathy is there which works without a problem. In previous versions of Ubuntu, Pidgin used to be included, but that has now been replaced by Empathy. You can install Pidgin from the Software center if you wish too. :)
Summary
(+) Faster bootup
(+) No need to go to terminal to get things done
(+) Empathy IM works great
(+) NO VIRUSES or trojans!
(+) Looks great
(+) Ubuntu Software Center makes installing apps a piece of a cake. Even an 80 year granny can install Ubuntu apps
(+) Cool new notification icons
(+) Free Ubuntu One cloud based storage
(+) Integration of Ubuntu One is done nicely. It appears as a normal drive
(+) New Themes
(-) We hate that built-in movie and music player. Replace them with Audacious2 and VLC and you are good to go!
You can get Ubuntu from here
Netbook users may download Ubuntu netbook remix

i did not like the built in rhythmbox but totem is not bad.. just that u hav to configure it in text mode.. smplayer is also a gr8 choice for a video player.. in the new ION based netbooks u can use the nvidia VDPAU output to play 1080p videos seamlessly.. and that is something that vlc cannot give at the moment.. :D
rhythmbox is cool

I am very impressed with Ubuntu in general considering that I fell into its arms as a result of Windows XP crapping out on me during the install phase. (XP can’t see SATA hard drives).
I had a Jaunty LiveCD that came to Nairobi, KENYA from Holland in 1 week – amazing!!
I did the upgrade to Karmic Koala (9.10) and it was flawless. So, it appears that Ubuntu plays nicely with Toshiba Satellites. Mine is the L305-S5944 model with: Pentium Dual Core 2.16 Ghz chips, 2GB RAM, 250 GB Hard Drive, WIFI, SD Card reader, etc.
Like I said, Ubuntu detected EVERYTHING!!
If Linux keeps on improving like this, imagine where Desktop Linux will be in another year or 2.

ubuntu 9.10 is awsome! i have only one pproblem: vodafone k3715 umts stick is not recognized andagter installation of kinda additional driver it works only every seco.d time :(
ihavnt had this problems with ubuntu 9.04 so i have to downgrade it.
but im surely stay with ubuntu!
Thanks to all comunity members for help!
I am not the only person reporting this problem: ubuntu 9.10 does not reliably detect blank or burned media in optical drives, especially in AMD multi-core CPUs.
I am having continuing problems with losing network connections that can only be resolved by rebooting (sound like Windows?).
And the notion of using IPv6 was stupid, can only be addressed by editing the config file as a super user (could the average computer user do that on their system).
Maxwell, I don’t what problems you’ve been having, but I have installed XP on quite a few machines and always detected SATA drives without problems.
Ubuntu is nice but is not ready to move people off of Windows, I can’t imagine getting my parents to use it. If the software isn’t in the Ubuntu repositories, it is a hassle to install.
I in stalled Ubuntu on a five year old Centrino laptop with full 2 GB RAM, faster hard drive and it turned into a super stable workhorse that I have used professionally for two years now to run an entire online retail shop administration, sales, and all sorts of editing and web access. Not once has there been any crash and the machine is just dead reliable and rather fast. I’m only now looking at replacing it with recent hardware but onlu Ubuntu could have given it the renewed lease of life it got when I got rid of its old XP environment.
Hey great screenshot.. Oh and thanks for using my wallpaper.. I hope you like it!!
Rock on..
Drew
I installed 9.10 on a client’s computer (March 26, 2010) which had been a dead Windows XP Pro(hard drive)and really enjoyed the Operating System. I fully played around with it while configuring the Restricted Drivers for the client. Ironically, I prefer to keepJ Juanty 9.04 on my personal laptop.
One thing I did not like was the removal of most of the really great Screen Savers found 8.10 Intrepid Ibex and Jaunty. But as the client was completely new to Linux this was not an issue. I am aware 10.4 is now available but I am recommending that the Newbie stick with 9.10 and really get the hang of Ubuntu before flipping to Lucid. I didn’t notice any appreciable difference in Boot time and personally I think the issue is a overly nick picked and non issue.
TekNinja, I find lucid to be the fastest ubuntu ever. Not only it boots up very quicky, but it lauches app faster too. Also, don’t forget that this is an LTS release which means better support
Thanks for the Heads Up Kamal DS. I will be updating a Compaq laptop from 9.10 to Lucid some this week. I am looking forward to the improvements you mentioned.
