Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook Benchmarked

  • Sharebar

There is 3 months left until the Ubuntu 10.10 is released to the public. But that has not stopped the die-hard Linux geeks to put the OS to several tests.

Folks at Phoronix have tested the netbook version of the upcoming release of Ubuntu – Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook Edition. Although an end user may think that Ubuntu 10.10 is nothing but an Ubuntu 10.04 with Unity Desktop, but there are multitude of changes that have taken place under the hood which have led to performance differences compared to the 10.04 Netbook Edition.

Samsung NC10, an Atom N270-powered netbook was used as the test unit. The results were pretty interesting-

* The Ubuntu 10.10 consumed more juice than the Ubuntu 10.04 netbook edition
* OpenArena benchmark ran faster on Ubuntu 10.10
* Tremulous ran faster on the Ubuntu 10.10
* LAME MP3 encoding, x264 Video encoding was surprisingly not any better than the current generation of Ubuntu.
* PostMark and FS-Mark run faster too on the newer version of Ubuntu.
* Kernel unpacking is takes less time in Ubuntu 10.10, which is a good thing

Overall, the Ubuntu 10.10 runs faster than the Ubuntu 10.04 and the development cycle is running faster than the Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook Edition.
