Squeezing that Ubuntu into that small 4GB SSD
Let us not forget the legendry EEE 701 that came with 4GB SSD. There is also another netbook that comes with ‘that’ small storage capacity, the Dell Mini 9.
Here is a way to keep the installation to minimum: Minimal CD installation
Unlike other installations where you install from the CD/DVD or USB drive, in case of Minimal CD installation, one installs it from the Internet. Follow instructions from the following link:
Once installed, run the following:
sudo apt-get -y install gnome-core gdm network-manager-gnome \
fast-user-switch-applet human-theme x11-xserver-utils tangerine-icon-theme \
gnome-themes-ubuntu ubuntu-artwork jockey-gtk gnome-screensaver \
gnome-utils gcalctool tsclient firefox vlc mozilla-thunderbird file-roller \
evince rhythmbox ubuntu-restricted-extras system-config-samba gftp pidgin
Some tips:
- Install abiword to get a word processor on your netbook. The abiword takes up much less space than the (bloated) Open Office apps
- VLC player for videos
- Audalicious for music
Note: If you have 2GB RAM, you should not use swap as it should be more than enough to support most of the functions that you would be doing on a netbook
Note2: Hibernation won’t work if you disable swap. Suspend, however, will work even without Swap.
