Microsoft: NO love for ARM processors

  • Sharebar

Not a good news for the ARM fans, According to Mike Nash (Microsoft’s president), Microsoft still has no plans to make Windows 7 compatible with ARM infrastructure.

We think that it is NOT a wise move by Microsoft. If they are able to port it to ARM platform, they will be able to sell even more license of their desktop OS. Also, by making it ARM compatible would allow phone companies to unveil phones running Windows 7 OS. Imagine the damage it would do the iPhone!

Microsoft have no reason to want to port it to arm netbooks. They lost a lot of money because of netbooks, chiefly because they can’t make as much money per license from such a cheap device and stay competitive.

When they charge $100 for a Windows license on, say, a $1000, its price rises 10% to $1100. But when they charge a $100 to a $300 netbook, its price rises 33% to $400, and it becomes uncompetitive, so they have to charge less, thus losing money.

But even if they wanted to port Windows to ARM, it’d be pointless to do so — because all the software written for Windows by third parties would have to be ported as well. Remember – Adobe Photoshop, Corel Draw, even the flash plugin are all compiled for x86. Porting the OS doesn’t port them. And what’s the point of having a bare-bones install of Windows on a laptop if you can’t install any of the the third-party apps that are actually the main selling point of Windows?
