Laplink PCMover Netbook Edition review

  • Sharebar

PCMover Netbook edition is a software specially devised for netbooks which claims to make moving your applications and files from your old computer to new netbook seamlessly.

I chose two of netbooks: Aspire D250 Android which I just received for review and an EEE 701, that had Android on at the time of this review. Since the Laplink software requires Windows, I removed Android and installed XP.

Installation was simple, but be careful every time when you are clicking next, otherwise you will end up installing ask.com’s toolbar, which I am sure many of you cannot stand a single second.

Working

I decided to use my Aspire D250 as my ‘new’ netbook and EEE 701 as ‘old’ computer. Transfers can be done via a variety of mediums – LAN, WLAN, USB, DVD etc.

I chose my trusty old Asus eee 701, but it kept giving me error that PCMover netbook edition is meant to be run only on netbooks. Checked out the official website and found out that it only works on netbooks powered by Atom processor. So, if your netbook came with AMD or Celeron processor, like in my case (eee 701), you cannot perform upgrade on it. But you can transfer data from it.

All the migrations that I tested worked fine. I did the transfers using WLAN. Just make sure that the destination netbook do have required amount of free space, other wise, your restore operation will be screwed-up.

Also, keep in mind the usual limitations – PCmover won’t make a XP-only application Windows 7 compatible automatically. That said, if that applications supports Windows 7 out-of-box, you won’t face any problems.

You can also roll back to the previous state if you wish to. The rollback aka ‘undo operation’ was pretty quick and my netbook was back to original state in 4 minutes.

Please get in touch with me if you have any questions about PCmover Netbook Edition. This edition checks for an Atom-processor. So, if you have a different processor there are other editions of PCmover that will do the job.
