Chromebook vs Netbook

Chromebook Series 5 from Samsung arrived to the stores a few days ago and a great debacle has spawned analyzing the success of this venture. This is because the Chromebook 5 has a pretty steep price tag on it. Leta us take a look at how Chromebook 5 actually performs. Will it outperform a ASUS 1215B netbook? Laptop Magazine became the moderator for this challenge. They set up a 12.1 inch Chromebook 5 and the 12.1 inch ASUS 1215B. Let’s see how these computers do based on different test requirements.

Let us take a quick look at price points. The new Samsung Series 5 3G Chromebook is available at a starting price of $499 at Amazon. The ASUS Eee PC 1215B is priced at $436 also at Amazon. Well, price wise, ASUS Eee PC 1215B netbook seems to be on bit of advantage there.

User Interface
ASUS had the advantage at this point by offering a more flexible option for operating systems. Windows is capable of running two or more browsers at the same time. Let’s face it; some websites are optimized on particular browsers. Some work better on Chrome and some work better on Firefox. We could say that Eee PC 1215B allows you to optimize your browsing experience. Also, having an actual desktop where you can manage and manipulate various files is very advantageous.

Web browsing
Ideally, this should be the area where Chromebook 5 should dominate. However, the surprising thing is that ASUS 1215B still beats it. Using the WebGL Aquarium Test, the ASUS Model performed fantastically at 15fps. Series 5 got only 4 fps. It is quite shocking to see this. Samsung Chromebook 5 did not come close to netbook’s performance.

Multimedia
Well, netbooks are not built for multimedia, but ASUS still has the lead. ASUS Eee PC 1215B netbook has a higher resolution of 1366×768 pixels compared to the standard 1280×700 pixels from Samsung Chromebook 5. Gaming is another area of concern. Planet vs Zombie played smoothly on 1215B while it has lags and hiccups on Series 5.

Battery
When it comes to battery Samsung Chromebook 5 is a clear winner. With 8 hours and 20 minutes of battery life, it beats the 6hr and 15 minutes of the ASUS Eee PC 1215B. Sadly, since the battery in the Chromebook 5 is integrated, it cannot be taken out and replaced.

The Chromebook was made only for web browsing and doing tasks on the cloud. It is a great experiment for Google to utilize the cloud with a dedicated device like this one. There are great many apps in Chrome App Store. However, most of us also need specific programs for specific jobs like Photoshop. Web based apps are just not there yet. A netbook will run full office program packs which Chromebook does not. If Samsung and all other Chrome based devices would lower their price points, they may just have an edge on good old netbook, but as it stands now, it is very clear that the winner is netbook.
