Asus Cedar Trail Netbooks – Preview
Asus will release Intel Atom Cedar Trail netbooks in February. The Asus Eee PC1025C will feature a 1.6GHz Atom N2600 CPU and will sell for $299, while anyone with an ounce of common sense will stump up the extra 20 bucks for a 1.86GHz Atom N2800 CPU for $319. That premium model is Asus Eee PC 1025CE.
Both machines feature 10.1-inch 1024 x 600 pixel displays, 1GB RAM, and a 32GB hard drive. They are each equipped with VGA nad HDMI ports and an SDHC card slot, as well as a VGA webcam perched atop the display.
The cheaper of the two models achieves better battery life (there had to be some justification for that lower spec) at 10 hrs 12 mins but the top model 1025CE still offers 9hrs 38 mins. And just to make that entry level machine look all the more ridiculous, the 1025C offers a trio of tardy USB-2 ports, no comparison with the 1025CE, which offers USB-3 connectivity amongst its three sockets.
In its defence, Asus is offering the Eee PC 1025C in gray, blue, red, pink, or black, while the 1025CE is limited to pink, blue, or purple. The 1025CE is the sort of decently-specced machine which could throw a lifeline to the endangered netbook sector. But in our opinion the lower-specced version is a slap in the face for unsuspecting consumers and non-techs everywhere.
