Firefox 8.0 and Firefox 9.0 beta

Mozilla-Firefox8-1Mozilla has launched Firefox 8.0, the most recent version of their web browser. for Windows, Mac OS and Linux, adding Twitter to the search box, and a one-time dialogue box enabling management of formerly installed add-ons. Firefox 8.0 offers the following advantages over its predecessor:

– add-ons installed by third party programs will now be disabled by default
– there is a preference setting for loading tabs on demand, without a pop-up box needing to be OK’d
– the restore time after closing Firefox has been shortened
– enhanced support for textures in WebGL
– improved support for HTML5 functionality, such as context menus
– improved support for switching between languages
– improved WebSockets support.

Mozilla has also patched some security issues and corrected a few stability problems. In addition to the desktop version of its browser, which accounts for 22% of worldwide browser use, Mozilla has upgraded their Firefox for Android browser, offering numerous performance enhancements. You can download Firefox 8.0 here for Windows, Mac or Linux, while Android users should visit the Android market for their update.

But that’s not all, folks. Mozilla has just released the beta version of Firefox 9.0 and it seems to be quite a comprehensive update – HTML 5, JavaScript and CSS performance are all improved. It also brings improved theme integration for Mac OS Lion and expanded support for monitoring ‘Do Not Track’ status, to make sure you really aren’t being tracked everywhere you go online. Several text-rendering problems are also addressed, such as better support for font-stretch and text-overflow.
