This $99 desktop PC runs android OS and allows parents remotely control what kids do on their computers.
Computer experience can be quite pervasive, especially to kids. I am a parent and even though my kid isn’t in the school age yet, I find myself wondering about the exposure to the dark sides of life and the impact it may have on my son. Parents must take action when it comes to protecting their kids.
MiiPC is made by group called ZeroDesktop which is asking for $50,000 Kickstarter support under heading “Power to the Parents”. The idea is to produce a neat desktop solution that enables kids to play and to do their homework. MiiPC runs android OS with access to slew of apps in Google Play. With purchase of MiiPC, parents get a free MiiPC app compatible with iOS or android allowing parents to monitor kids’ activities in real time and to control access to the internet and apps.
Using this MiiPC app parent can limit the play time, and set up a schedule for the entire week. Using measurement tools parents can see how much time their kids spent on google, or facebook and with this feedback parents can adjust their kids’ use of computer.
In ZeroDesktop’s words,
“Our mission is to create a simple and effective way for families to take back control of online experiences, letting MiiPC create a safe and relaxed environment for your family computing”.
WiiPC mini PC runs android Ice Cream Sandwich OS, which is planned to be upgraded to Jelly Bean next month.
The desktop has all standard ports including HDMI for connection to a monitor with support of up to 1920 x 1080 pixels. Connectivity options include Ethernet, WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, and Bluetooth 4.0.
WiiPC is powered by 1.2GHz dual-core Marvell New Armada processor with 1GB of RAM. There is only 4GB of storage, but that could be expanded via external hard drive (2 USB 2.0 Ports) or SD card (1 SD card slot). For $99 you get the basic package. All peripherals are sold separately.
First production is scheduled for May this year, so we should see MiiPC desktops in stores by summer.
