Archos 5 Internet Tablet User Review
Over at archosfans.com, a geek by the name of tablet5 got himself an Archos 5 Internet Tablet and he seems to be very impressed with it. Here is what he said in his post. For those who do not about this little MID, it is an Android powered MID by Archos that has an 4.8-inch display with WVGA resolution (800×480). It supports a wide variety of media playbacks and is meant to be used as an Internet tablet as-well-as a PMP.

Screen is the same as the “old” 5
Native filesystem is EXT3 – no problem for files over 4GB
MKV supported but loss of sync if you jump around the file and choppy on some videos – bitrates don’t seem to be the main cause.
Can’t get subtitles from any video with them embedded – have not tried separate text or srt file.
Plays streamed files – have tried MKV, AVI (Xvid), MPEG, and transport stream
A 6-channel AAC audio video I tried was silent as was one with DTS – (maybe I need to try some more)
Does not play the RealVideo I have tried
Can’t pair with my HTC phone yet – still playing around. – can’t experiment with “tether” until I can pair it!
Apps can be loaded from places other than the Archos appstore but not the Google Android market. (maybe because no camera/compass)
Can put more than 1000 music tracks in a single directory
Sound quality is very similar (to my ears) of previous Archos players
Works fine with existing Archos 5 DVR station – only used composite so far – not tried component/HDMI video or SPDIF audio.
FM radio suffers very badly from interference when backlight is on – very good once its off.
Wireless sensitivity seems very similar to the existing Archos 5 Internet Media Tablet and 604
Internet browsing is good with zoom in/out – new window and panning.
No Flash capability yet – I believe this is definitey coming.
PDF handling via android app seems fine to me.
AC3 audio volume is low when compared to MP3 in video files.
Machine seems to have locked up a couple of times – possibly due to me trying something via wireless when low signal.
GPS does not have to be unlocked/enabled with the Tele-Atlas bundled software. Any GPS app like InstaMapper works.
Bluetooth supports A2DP (stereo audio via bluetooth)
