MeeGo Linux: future uncertain

  • Sharebar

Nokia just announced that it will be in partnership with Microsoft to implement Windows Phone 7 on Nokia smart phones. The Meego and Symbian will still be ship on the Nokia Phones until Windows Phone 7 is implemented. We all know Symbian is cry much ready to forgo but what about the more recent MeeGo Linux? The Meego Linux isca merging of 2 projects: Moblin and Maemo Linux. MeeGo is not maintained by Nokia but it is one of its backers. The manager of the project was Linux Foundation. Nokia has already planned to introduce the Meego Linux on some of the smart phones in the future. Another major backer for this project is Intel that was pushing for meego for phones and mobile computers. Intel announced that their commitment to the platform has not changed.

According to Andrew Wafaa, a developer, he thinks that Meego for the tablet and netbook industry will be short lived. Wafaa is the developer for OpenSUSE Linux the UI from that one is based on the Meego. Wafaa also thinks that Meego has already stopped the work for the Netbook and as a result he will be stopping also on the Smeegol project. The foundation for the concerns of Wafaa is based on the discussions from developers. The plans for MeeGo 1.2 are also underwhelming with no new features and just some fixes here and there.

Fujitsu LifeBook MH380

Moving to the other side of the spectrum, Fujitsu just released that it will create a netbook using the MeeGo Linux. This netbook will be a variation of Lifebook MH330 and it will be sold in Singapore for a whopping $382 for some weird reason. According to CNET, a model with Windows 7 Starter pack will fare $9 more. So maybe MeeGo is really about to die out soon.
