Dell Alienware M18x To Get Ivy Bridge and Kepler

Dell’s super-heavyweight hardcore gaming notebook the Alienware M18x is slated for an upgrade to Ivy Bridge 22nm processors and new 28nm Kepler architecture NVidia graphics cards. In actual fact, the M18x, M17x, and M14x are all to receive upgrades, though the ‘super-powered netbook’ 11-inch M11x seems to have fallen by the wayside, at least for this wave of refreshes.

Dell says its customers prefer full-sized keyboards and optical drives on premium machines, both of which are lacking on the M11x. This means the M11x falls in a no-man’s-land between average-spec gaming notebook and not-very-versatile powerful office machine, even if it is slickly designed and ultra-portable.

The 18.4-inch Alienware M18x will sport a quadcore hyper-threaded 2.3Ghz i7-3610QM CPU as its baseline chip, but the M18x will be configurable up to a 2.7GHz Ivy Bridge i7-3820QM CPU. For graphics options demanding users can opt for either a pair of Radeon 7970Ms in CrossFire or SLI’d NVidia GTX 675M cards.

For storage the next-gen M18x can be equipped with a SATA 3 hybrid SSD-HDD solution topping out at a 512GB SSD with 750GB hard disk space. Buyers can look forward to at least 6GB of 1600MHz RAM. Audio will be stepped up courtesy of a Creative Sound Blaster recon3Di sound system.

Connectivity options and other such fine details are yet to be confirmed. Those world-beating specs don’t come cheap, and the top-of-the-range current-gen Alienware M18x will set you back an eye-watering $4500. So start saving. Hope they’ve fixed those spongey keys this time around.
