iPhone 5 launch in China
Despite 4G incompatibility with largest Chinese carrier (and world’s largest) Apple iPhone started selling well earlier this year. In first quarter Apple covered 17.3 percent of Chinese smartphone market share. Towards the end of the year however we reported on Apple loosing China as their market share slipped to 8 percent. It became obvious that, at least in China, variety and affordability are more important.
iPhone 5 has just launched in China on Friday and despite the gloomy forecasts iPhone 5 took China by the storm. It seems that the Apple mania has hit China as well as Apple just announced having sold 2 million iPhone 5 this weekend. iPhone 5 launch has thus surpassed that of iPhone 4S. Lines were shorter as reported by apple insider as Apple started taking reservations online.
Weeks before shopping craze in China, iPhone 5 and iPad mini are firmly planted in the mainland and ready for pre New Years’ sale in January (Year of Snake starts on February 10). iPhone 5 is now available in China via China Unicom, and China Telecom.
“Customer response to iPhone 5 in China has been incredible, setting a new record with the best first weekend sales ever in China,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “China is a very important market for us and customers there cannot wait to get their hands on Apple products.”
iPhone 5 has been launched in US, South Korea, now in China, Russia and Brazil and Apple promises to land iPhone 5 in 100 countries by the end of the year.
