iPad mini 2 and iPad 5 are to be unveiled in October. Here is what to expect.
Apple is also expected to wow us with 5th generation iPad and iPad mini featuring more pixels. But iPad mini and new 10-inch iPad will have to wait for their unveiling until October, Bloomberg reports. Both new iPhones and iPads will feature Apple’s newest iOS 7 operating software.
As expected, new iPad will be thinner and lighter, with iPad-mini-like thin side bezel. To trim down the energy consumption, iPad 5 will only have one LED light bar (rather than two seen on iPad 4). This will allow for smaller, thinner, lighter battery.
Paul Semenza, analyst at NPD DisplaySearch, wrote: “It’s likely that part of the thinner/lighter design will be reducing the size of the LED backlight, partly by making the display more efficient and partly by using more efficient LEDs.”
Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst from KGI Securities ventures
We think the tablet will, at 7.5-8.0mm, be 15% thinner than iPad 4. The new device will likely be about 500 grams, or some 25% lighter than iPad 4, run on an A7X processor, and sport cameras with similar specs to the iPad 4’s (front HD, rear 5MP). The casing shape and color (silver and black) and narrow bezel design will be similar to the iPad mini’s.
The Scratch-resistant glass with oleophobic coating protecting the iPad 4 is 0.25mm thick. New slimmer glass of 0.23mm is to be used on new iPad 5. Though the size of the display will not change, the technology will. GF2, or GF DITO technology is to be applied as new advanced touch-screen technology already used in iPad mini. Also the Aspect Ratio will change to 16:9 (from 4:3). The displays for new iPad 5 and Mini 2 will be made primarily by LG and Sharp.
The 5th generation iPad is rumored to be just 7.9mm thick (iPad 4 is 9.4mm thick). Nowhereelse.fr claims that the dimensions of iPad 5 will be 232 x 178.5 x 7.9mm (9.13 x 7.03 x 0.31 inches). That means new iPad will be slightly smaller and thinner than its predecessor. The new iPad is expected to start at US$499 (16GB Wifi), same as current iPad 4.
Contrary to previous iPad 5 rumors, the new generation iPad will not sport A7 processor as Apple wanted to decrease it dependance on its arch rival Samsung. Instead Apple will improve performance of its current A6X chip. Other reports though indicate, that although there were discussions about it, Apple will retain Samsung’s services ad their SoC maker.
iPad Mini was unveiled last November, but this year, it had been reported, Apple plans to launch the new generation of this 7.9-inch tablet in October. Both new iPad and iPad mini should be available to buy in November. The second gegeration iPad mini, or iPad mini 2, will feature a retina like display of 2,048 x 1,536 pixels (same as in iPad 4). The pixel density however will be full 324 ppi. The new Nexus 7 2 with similar ppi will be Mini’s biggest competitor. Especially since the 2nd generation, Nexus 7 2013 tablet sells for mere $230 (16GB).
In terms of how well iPad mini is selling (or shipping), IHS iSuppli’s Vinita Jakhanwal stated,
“Based on what we are seeing in the production pipeline…The volumes are similar to the iPad Mini that we saw in Q4 of last year,”
The sales of iPads decreased in this quarter but with new iPad 5 and iPad mini 2 out, the pre-christmas market should be booming. As Tom Mainelli from IDC said
“With no new iPads, the market slowed for many vendors, and that’s likely to continue into the third quarter. However, by the fourth quarter we expect new products from Apple, Amazon and others to drive impressive growth in the market.”
