A few cynics murmured that Intel would never launch a smartphone and that the Medfield line of processors would never reach the market. Not so. Technology Review magazine from MIT had a hands-on review of a new prototype smartphone featuring Intel’s newest mobile CPU, the Medfield.

The phone runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread and although approximately the same size as the iPhone 4 it was considerably lighter thanks to its prototype all-plastic design, where the Apple flagship product is a mass of metal and Gorilla Glass; this reference design aims to enthuse manufacturers into producing phones based on Intel’s latest technology.

Stephen Smith, Vice President of Intel’s Architecture Division, explained, ‘They can use as much or as little of the reference design as they like’. He also proudly detailed how Intel has incorporated circuits into the Medfield processors specifically to accelerate Android apps and browsing.

Technology Review:

The phone was powerful and pleasing to use, on a par with the latest iPhone and Android handsets. It could play Blu-Ray-quality video and stream it to a TV if desired; Web browsing was smooth and fast…One feature that stood out was the camera’s “burst mode,” which captures 10 full-size eight-megapixel images at a rate of 15 per second.
