Intel Predicts $700 Ultrabooks

Ultrabooks should rise in popularity this summer. They currently sell from $800 and up, but Intel says ultrabooks will be shipping for $700 by fall.

During the summer a whole heap of new ultabooks will reach market, offering new functionality. Some will be convertibles, switching effortlessly from notebook to tablet format, while others will meld touchscreen functionality with Microsoft’s new Windows 8 touch-optimized OS.

Intel’s general manager for PC Client Group said at the Beijing International Developer Forum yesterday that no less than 75 Intel Ivy Bridge ultrabooks will reach the market this spring.

The ultrabook concept was only dreamt up a year or so ago, and ever since Intel has been striving to promote the ultra-thin, highly capable form factor, creating a $300m ultrabook war chest to make the new format a success. Intel will soon begin a ‘multi-hundred million dollar’ ad campaign with TV and Internet ads.

Intel also plans to support retail stores with ‘ultrabook experience zones’, where buyers get first-hand experience of the improved performance offered by ultrabooks compared with normal notebooks.
