Symantec Executive warns against free Anti-Virus

According to Symantec, the free Anti-Virus apps do not provide adequate amount of protection against viruses and worms.

“If you are only relying on free antivirus to offer you protection in this modern age, you are not getting the protection you need to be able to stay clean and have a reasonable chance of avoiding identity theft,” said David Hall, a Product Manager for Symantec.

Instead, I keep my netbooks and notebooks away from Symantec and Norton products as they greatly slow down my computers. This is despite the fact that both of those companies claim that they do not slow down the computers, but sadly, they do. I prefer Eset NOD32 on all of my netbooks (I’m not affiliated to Eset) as it does not slows down my netbook and offers great protection. There used be a time, when I used to consider the free AVG anti-virus reliable, but lately I have discovered that it is no longer effective in tussling with the modern viruses and worms.

What anti-virus app do you guys use on your netbooks/notebooks?

I prefer Kaspersky – very reliable and definitely does not slow down my notebook.

  2. Phil says:

    I use Nod32. Works perfectly

  3. Kim says:

    AVG sucks. NOD32 FTW!

  4. MInnie says:

Norton 2009 slows down my netbook. Like Mita, I too use Kaspersky

  5. timdawg says:

I use Avast on all my computers and it seems to work fine. Of course Symantec bought it so it’s not “free” anymore but there are still links for the free version and it is updated so you get the latest definitions. Symantec isn’t stupid they have to bad mouth free antivirus so they can make money!!

  6. timdawg says:

Sorry my mistake Symantec brought the firewall I used, Sygate, not Avast antivirus.
