Western Digital Ultra-slim HDD Upgrades
Western Digital is now shipping an upgraded version of its Scorpio Blue hard drive, which is primarily developed with ultrabooks in mind. The new drive is just 7mm thick and features a maximum capacity of 500GB.
The latest generation Scorpio Blue delivers lower power draw, leading Western Digital to claim it’s the ‘most efficient’ spinning drive available. Noise has also been reduced on the new HDDs, and the manufacturers state that the drive can resist shocks of up to 400Gs, so it should withstand knocks and bumps to ultrabooks.
Although the Scorpio Blue drive was designed chiefly for ultrabooks, the drive will also be available for as a component. Naturally most consumers would be looking for an SSD in their ultrabook, but the new drive gives manufacturers options for devices favoring amount of storage over speed.
The device will also help OEMs looking to produce budget ultrabooks. Might even find one in a few netbooks. The Lenovo X130e notebook uses a 7mm HDD. Western Digital 500 GB Scorpio Blue sells for $80 at Amazon.
