  • Sharebar

Qualcomm Snapdragon S4Just as Intel is muscling in on the smartphone market with its long-overdue Medfield Atom chips, Qualcomm is attempting to strike back at the x86 territory, so long domnated by Intel. Qualcomm Snapdragon processor is currently the processor of choice in more than 300 handsets and tablets, and will soon be seen in another 300, but Windows 8′s support for ARM architecture has led Qualcomm to switch its focus to the lucrative ultrabook market.

Qualcomm is currently in negotiations with several PC manufacturers about supplying the CPUs for compact notebooks. The microprocessor producer hopes PC firms will build machines around its Snapdragon S4 chip, expected to appear in devices around Q2. The new S4 Snapdragon processor will be available in a range of sizes – single-core, dualcore and quadcore, all clocked at somewhere between 1.5GHz and a mouth-watering 2.5GHz.

For now, Qualcomm have to be content with parading a Snapdragon powered Windows 8 slate at CES 2012, although the said S4 family of chips will feature in a number of smart TVs, amongst them Lenovo’s 55-inch 240Hz IPS K91 model, which runs Android 4 ICS.
