Plextor Releases 512GB SSD – M3 Pro

Plextor-M3-Pro

Plextor has shaken up the SSD market by announcing its new M3 Pro range of solid-state drives at this year’s CES. The 2.5-inch models squeeze into a 7mm-high shell, making them suitable for ultrabooks. The Plextor M3 Pro will be available in 128GB, 256GB and 512GB sizes. The Japanese component-maker will begin shipping the devices in February although no details of pricing have been announced.

The M3 Pro offers read and write speeds of ‘up to’ 540MB/s and 450MB/s respectively, with 75000 input and 69000 output operations per second, said Plextor. The drives use Toshiba flash memory.

Although a considerable improvement on the current MS3 data transfer speeds, that’s really only top-level SSD average. On the other hand 512GB SSD looks tempting, and a 3.5-inch dock comes thrown in for anyone who fancies pooping the Plextor M3 Pro in their home PC case.

Wonder how long before we see an ultrabook packing a 512GB SSD? Our money’s on Q2, but we’ve always been optimists.
