Google Chrome 17- Faster and Safer
Chrome 17 – the latest update to Google’s Chrome browser has been released, featuring ‘instant’ browsing and improved security features. Chrome 17 arrives two months after Chrome 16 was launched and it offers faster,Chrome 17 secure browsing. Users can update from within Chrome via the About section. Chrome is already jolly fast, and now Google are tweaking the way the browser operates in the background to make it that bit quicker – pages will begin to load in the background before you’ve finished entering the url.
Google’s Dominic Hamon explains that any ‘auto-completes’ offered by Google as you type will begin pre-rendering the page, that’s downloading bits of it to you and me. It’s really only noticeable on heavy sites like YouTube at the moment, but as the algorithms behind the scenes improve Chrome will be able to perform even faster.
Security-wise Google has updated the way it checks the trustworthiness of sites – in prior versions of Chrome, Google checked requested files against their Safe Browsing blacklist, which flags up sites with malicious or non-secure content. Now Google runs additional checks on potentially dangerous executable (.exe) files to keep its users as safe as possible.
Any files which haven’t yet been added to Google’s whitelist are now analyzed to determine trustworthiness, based on other files from the same site or publisher. Suspicious files are flagged and the user is alerted. Chrome’s anti-phishing mechanisms now inspect destination addresses for signs of security flaws.
