Google Reader alternatives
Google Reader closing its doors on July 1, 2013. What are the best alternatives?
Google Reader is a web-based RSS service so that it is quickly and easily accessible to anyone using any device. Replacing our Google reader will therefore require a cloud-based RSS service. Google Reader may be dead, but Google’s less known Google Currents may be getting more popular. It is a RSS reader app with a magazine-like interface and a Breaking News feature. At this moment it’s not a browser-based reader, but that may change.
NewsBlur
NewsBlur will offer a free account for up to 64 feeds and up to 10 news bids at a time, or a $1 per month premium account for unlimited use. The Premium account also offers a “private shares” feature. Average load time takes 0.54 of a second. NewsBlur has over 20 thousands users already and this number will rise before summer.
The Old Reader
The Old Reader is another RSS reader, still in the beta stage, but it should be up and running soon. It is also a social RSS reader, which makes it stand out. There is a “Find Friends” feature, which enables you to share all your news feeds. These feeds then show up in your “Shared” folder. All feeds can be neatly assembled and organized. There is a “Trending” news feed and “Liked” as well.
Flipboard is another social hub and newsreader app, but it only works on mobile devices, rather than on desktop.
Feedly on Chrome
Feedly is an app for iOS and android, but works well in Chrome browser as well. Feedly has a great “Save for Later” feature, which allows you to read stuff when you get around to it.
Taptu
Taptu is another app that also works in a browser. It is more visual than other reader, probably more attractive to people who like pictures more than text descriptions. Cool thing is a news feed which lets you choose your own feed. Taptu offers news categories, but you can customize them easily.
pulse news reader
Another free RSS reader app is Pulse. Much like Taptu, it flashes news feed and it comes in picture tiles, which are optimized for touch. Apart from Taptu’s categories listed in the menu, you can also search for a site you want.
FeedDemon is a good windows reader, but it would not work on my iMac.
