Google Nexus 10 tablet

Asus Google Nexus 7 tablet has been a roaring success. Google made a larger 10.1-inch tablet called Nexus 10. We had already written a piece on Nexus 10 vs iPad 3 so let us take a closer look at this 10-inch Google made in collaboration with Samsung.

Design has been influenced by Galaxy Tab 2 10.1. It is a beautiful tablet that is easy to hold and carry. On the front top bezel there are two speakers carrying a crisp sound. The measurements are 263.9 x 177.6 x 8.9mm. Nexus 10 weighs 603 grams. The back of the tablet feels soft, almost tacky, but well done.

First thing that absolutely blows your mind is the super high 2,560 x 1,600 resolution of its 10.1-inch beautifully crisp PLS LCD display. Welcome 1080p HDTV! Viewing angles are superb, although the contrast is average. All masterfully shielded in Corning’s Gorilla Glass 2.

Nexus offers micro-USB port and 3.5mm headphone jack, micro-HDMI port to display or play your video content on larger screen is certainly welcome.

Fron facing camera is just 1.9MP, but it is capable of 720p video. Rear camera should be superior however in Nexus 10 disappoints. It is a 5MP camera, but shooting with it is a chore. For most tablet users camera isn’t a deciding factor, but if Samsung is going to insist on one than why not make it work well. It has a new Photo Sphere mode which is 360 degree picture mode. It generates these blue dots that you must connect when taking pictures and the software stitches these dots to create a panoramic, or rather spherical pictures.

Nexus 10 is run by powerful 1.7GHz dual-core Cortex-A15 processor with Mali T604 graphics and 2GB of RAM. The storage starts at 16GB, option is 32GB

Connectivity is of 802.11 b/g/n variety. Not sure why 802.11 a isn’t there. There is also Bluetooth 4.0 and NFC on both sides as well as GPS.

Battery is a weak point in Nexus 10. Most premium tablets pull 8 hours of use on a charge. Nexus 10 lasts about 7 hours.

Nexus 10 sports newest Android 4.2 Jelly Bean OS. The keyboard offers Swype predictive text technology, so typing can be quick and fun. Miracast, the new android’s answer to AirPlay is not on Nexus 10 tablet. Multiple users is enabled so you can decide what your kids should have access to and what they should not see.

In conclusion Nexus 10 tablet is a superb android tablet especially when considering a very low $399 price tag for a 16GB model. Asus Infinity TF700 may beat it on some fronts, but with $450 price tag simply does not compare. iPad 4 may offer a better battery life (11 hours) but it will cost you $100 more. Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 2 has much worse display, performance, and weight and saves you only $50. Samsung Google Nexus 10 is a premium package for very reasonable $399.
