Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 – $400 million revenue in 24 hours

Gaming is now bigger than Hollywood, so the record-breaking launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare makes it the biggest entertainment event of all time. Activision Publishing has announced that 6.5 million copies ware sold in the US and UK markets on launch day. The $400 million revenue generated in 24 hours beats last year’s Call of Duty: Black Ops $360 million first-day takings. That in turn broke the record of its predecessor, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, which raked in $310 million on its first day.

Activision Publishing CEO, Bobby Kotick, says Modern Warfare 3′s success makes it “the biggest entertainment launch of all time in any medium” and that there “has never been another entertainment franchise that has set opening day records three years in a row”. Accumulated sales for the Call of Duty game line outperform box office receipts for Star Wars or Lord Of the Rings.
