Samsung is one tech giant which never shies away from trying new things. This helped it in gaining the status of largest mobile manufacturer in the world beating the long-time leader Nokia. Now, when the world is going gaga over wearable accessories notably Google Glass, Fitness Bands and Smart Watches, it seems Samsung also has something up in its sleeves. If rumors are to be believed, Samsung is planning to launch a Smart Watch alongside Galaxy Note 3 on September 4 in Berlin.
According to rumors, it might be dubbed as Galaxy Gear, since Samsung recently applied for patents of this name. It’s definitely going to pack a punch with Galaxy Gear taking on already launched smart watches from Sony, Motorola, Pebble, etc. as well as rumored launched from giants like Apple, Google, Qualcomm, and more. Let’s take a look at the rumors of the Samsung Galaxy Gear.
Although, Samsung is working on flexible displays, but the watch might come with normal OLED touchscreen of 2.5 inches sporting resolution of 320 x 320 pixels. Talking about internals, it will have combination of 1.5 GHz dual-core Exynos 4412 processor for processing apps and Mali 400 GPU for rendering graphics. In memory department, it will have a 1 GB RAM.
It will also flaunt a 2 megapixel camera embedded on its strap. It will also have an inbuilt speaker. Though, many rumors suggests that the device will be able to make or receive calls thanks to its SIM slot, we believe Samsung wouldn’t do this as it might cannibalize sales of its smartphones. However, the device will surely have Bluetooth 4.0 LE and NFC support. The device will also feature lots of sensors such as accelerometers, pedometer, etc.
The smartness in Galaxy Gear will come from its Android 4.2 (JellyBean) OS. The OS will have Samsung’s proprietary TouchWiz customization and tighter integration with Samsung devices. It will have voice recognition functionality with the help of S Voice. S Health will keep track of user’s health by tracking their walking, calories burned and more. For social media enthusiasts, it will have support for Facebook and Twitter. Instead of Google Play Store, it will have Samsung’s App Store since apps running on the watch would certainly be different from a normal smartphone.
Release Date and Price
According to rumors, Galaxy Gear will be officially unveiled on September and we might see it in market as soon as October. The pricing of the watch is unknown, but going by Samsung’s pricing policy, it’s safe to assume that it will be priced economically for mass-appeal.
Smart watches have been there since past few years, but none of them have managed to gain recognition. Sony SmartWatch and its recently launched successor SmartWatch 2 are simply considered as companion device only. While Pebble, Kreyos, etc. have tried building something really useful by crowd funding, they haven’t been able to reach to the masses. On the other hand, health bands like Nike FuelBand, Jawbone, Fitbit, etc. are limited to health tracking only.
Going by the rumored specifications, Galaxy Gear might become an actual Smart Watch rather than a mere companion device.
