OnLive Extends Services To GoogleTV
Video game streaming provider OnLive is adding a new way for users to access their services – they will provide console-standard gaming to any Google TV-enabled device, including set-top boxes, Blu-ray players and the various HDTVs announced at CES 2012. OnLive will kick off with just a Viewer app on Google TV, allowing you to watch other people playing and to use OnLive’s social features.
The expected date for full gameplay functionality was not released. Nonetheless, this news might just swing anyone wavering between which streaming box to buy to plump for a Google TV instead of Apple TV, Roku, or Boxee streaming boxes… although it might be worth holding off for a month or two to see how this one pans out – OnLive already has Windows and Mac clients, plus a few third-party-manufactured devices, and recently expanded their cloud gaming services to several Android smartphones and slates.
The fact that there is also an iOS app on its way suggests whatever streaming box you choose might soon be OnLive-capable. In a separate development, OnLive will soon release a $50 compatible wireless controller for anyone who dislikes using a touch interface for gaming.
