Toshiba’s 6.1 inch 2560 x 1600 pixel LCD display
Time for a paradigm shift. Very few people find anything to complain about with the the iPhone 4S 3.5 inch 2560 x 1600 pixel Retina Display.
Now Toshiba has unveiled a development 6.1 inch 2560 x 1600 pixel LCD display. To save you from doing the mental arithmetic that’s a pixel density of 498 pixels per inch (ppi) compared to Apple iPhone’s 326 ppi. Here is a difference between the 495ppi and 244ppi (sorry no 326ppi example):
Apple calls its screen a Retina Display because at that level of density the human eye is incapable of distinguishing individual pixels. This has led some people to say that Toshiba’s new display is sharper than necessary, though whether or not the eye can pick out individual pixels is not a good guide to image quality – most people can’t spot the individual dots of color in a newspaper held at arm’s length, but that doesn’t mean a shot couldn’t have been taken with a 0.3MP webcam.
Toshiba boasts of photographic-quality images, all delivered on a display with viewing angles of 176 degrees. The table above indicates display resolution comparison of iPhone 4/4S, Samsung Nexus and a new Samsung tablet. This new 11.6-inch tablet Samsung is preparing would be equivalent of 299ppi. iPad 3 is also rumoured to have a retina display when it is released this summer.
