Lotus Glass Teamed With Samsung OLED Displays

Lotus Glass

Corning’s Gorilla Glass famously makes the iPhone and several premium smartphones a bit mre likely to survive falls without a broken screen, but a lesser-known product made by Corning is Lotus Glass, which can be laid on top of OLED dislays and will flex without cracking. Lotus Glass makes curved displays possible, and helps screens absorb impact by flexing rather than letting the glass beneath take all the strain when dropped. In this way non-Gorilla Glass screens are rendered more durable at less cost than would be needed to use the more expensive toughened Gorilla Glass.

Now Corning is linking up with Samsung to supply backplane glass substrates to strengthen high-contrast OLED screens.OLED displays offer more vivid colours and sharper contrast than standard displays. They also run using less power than traditional LCDs, giving longer battery life. Lotus Glass is of course also usable with normal LCD displays.

The secret to the design of Lotus Glass is its high annealing point, which means it can be heated to far higher temperatures before being allowed to slowly cool, thus reducing microscopic fissures which occur in the formation of standard glass screens.

Such fissures or cracks are weak points in the glass, which lead to internal stress points – weaknesses – in the finished product. The high thermal stability of Lotus Glass (and Gorilla Glass for that matter) means other smartphone components can run more efficiently, and overall response times are cut. Faster phones, more able to withstand shocks. And to top it all, the superior quality of Lotus Glass and Gorilla Glass enable sharper resolutions for for better image quality.
