Dell XPS 13 Ultrabook At CES 2012- Preview
Dell is showcasing a new ultrabook, the XPS 13 at the CES in Las Vegas. First impressions are that it’s incredibly compact. Although it offers the typical 13.3-inch display found on most other ultrabooks, XPS 13 measures just 32 x 21cm with a thickness tapering from 18mm down to 6mm.
The Dell XPS 13 also features a stylish design, rivalling the Asus Zenbook UX-21 for the title of most beautiful ultrabook. At 1.4kg it’s not particularly weighty, either. So much for appearances, what about the user experience?
The keyboard offers a solid typing experience, and it’s backlit for those times when the lights are low. The weighty hinge brings both stability and durability to the XPS 13, and the body itself is a mixture of a carbon fiber base and aluminum upper chassis. The screen is protected by Gorilla Glass, but in this preview unit the display seemed slightly sub-standard – we hope this was only a rough-and-ready pre-production unit.
Unusually, the XPS features a DisplayPort socket instead of the ultrabook staple miniHDMI. There is one USB-3 port and a USB-2, plus headphone jack. Specs? All we know so far is it will be an i5 or i7 CPU with the usual 4GB RAM and a 128GB or 256GB SSD. Prices are expected to start at $899. Dell has also promised to release an entry-level i3 version later in 2012.
