At a recent IFA Conference that was held in Berlin, Samsung unveiled its new Samsung Gear S2 smartwatch. As most people know, Samsung’s line of smartwatches has been a fierce competitor to the Apple Watch. The Gear S2 features a watch face with a round display, which is different than the original Gear watch that had a rectangular display. Consumers get to choose between two versions of the Gear S2; a classic leather banded watch or a sporty looking watch. The leather band of the classic version can be swapped out with the bands of other Samsung watches by using the quick release mechanism built in. You can choose between black, silver or dark gray colors for the Gear S2. But the cosmetic features of the Gear S2 aren’t even the best part about it. The watch will be able to connect to a 3G network, which means it doesn’t have to rely on mobile phones in order to function properly. This also means it can make phone calls and it can utilize the functions of Samsung Pay. The watch has a 1.2 inch display screen with a pixel resolution of 360 x360. The watch itself is 11.4 millimeters thick, which makes it big but not too bulky. Therefore it should be comfortable on your wrist.
The Gear S2 runs on an open source operating system called Tizen. Samsung helped develop this operating system in order to separate itself from the Android operating system. Nokia to Microsoft, “I think it’s time we see other people.”
Rumors have been floating for some time that Windows Phone OEM Nokia has been two-timing Microsoft by also having an Android phone project as a backup. Yesterday the Wall Street Journal added more fuel to dire by confirming that Nokia will expose an Android device at the Mobile World Congress trade show coming up in Barcelona this month. It might seem strange and surprising for Nokia to first handover its Windows Phone maker Microsoft in exchange for a $7.2 billion only to later build an Android powered device. But let’s not forget that Windows Phone was not able to challenge Android’s market share at the lower end of the Smartphone market in total. Maybe Nokia wants to switch to Android for budget devices and that could have Microsoft get a small piece of a large portion of smartphone market pie.
Android smartwatches are starting to become known amongst consumers and tech enthusiasts. But some people are unsure about the differences between Android smartwatches and other brands of smartwatches, like the Apple Watch. Those who enjoy Apple over Google may not want to switch to Android Wear just to try out a different operating system. Well it seems that Google may have a way to solve this problem because they are releasing a new version of their Android Wear software that is designed for Apple’s “iOS” mobile operating system. Android Wear for iOS will be available for the LG Watch Urbane. In the future, there will be other Android Wear smartwatches that will support the Apple iOS. Some of these watches will be Asus, Huawei, and Motorola. Google plans to keep people informed on the latest developments in these future releases.
This latest move seems to be Google’s way of competing with the highly awaited Apple Watch. When people put on one of these Android smartwatches, it will be able to communicate with their iPhone because of the iOS integration. Now people who are predominately iPhone users can now purchase another Android device and use them together. Before, consumers generally had to stick with one brand. If they bought an Android phone then every other device the purchase had to be Android as well. The same went for Apple users too. People with iPhones needed iPads, iPods and so on. When Android Wear was first released it was only able to work with a Google operating system. But with this new ability for Android Wear to communicate with an iOS, it opens up all kinds of possibilities for cross brand communication.
Right now the fitness tracker Fitbit is the top selling smartwatch with Apple Watch coming in second place. It would be very hard for Android to make itself stand out amongst these top two competitors unless they did something unique with their smartwatches that no one else has done. This new move by Android will likely be the thing that keeps their watches selling and keeps them stable in the marketplace. For one thing, Android Wear is only $100 whereas the Apple Watch starts at $500. Most people are not going to pay $500 when they can pay $100, especially if it will communicate with their existing iPhone. The one bad thing Apple has going for it is its prices. They are always the most expensive computer brand on the market. Since smartwatches are not really that popular to begin with, it is unlikely that consumers will keep shelling out $500 for the newest Apple Watch. Therefore, Google has a strong chance of getting their Android Wear ahead of the game.
Qualcomm has developed a new digital signal processor chip called Hexagon 680. This is a mobile chip that is supposed to help prolong the battery life in your mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets. The chip will also give you better location data, even if you are in a location without a powerful navigational signal. Plus, if you take pictures with the mobile device then it will give you a nicer blend of bright and dark imagery. New smartphones that offer camera improvements are usually big sellers. We have already seen that plenty of times with Apple’s iPhones and Samsung’s Galaxy phones. Therefore, it is very likely that Qualcomm’s new Hexagon 680 chip will be in many mobile devices in the years to come.

This added hardware is what helps the chip produce advance imagery when used in conjunction with the Qualcomm Spectra camera image sensor. When it is used with the Snapdragon 820 processor, the CPU will be able to perform three times faster while using only 10% of its normal power. Many smartphone manufacturers have been looking for ways to cut down the power consumption of their smartphones. The one thing that consumers always complain about with their mobile devices is the fact the battery runs out too fast. We live in the age where people want the most convenience possible. In terms of batteries, this means consumers want the batteries to charge their mobile devices for longer periods of time. The smartphone that can do this the best will win over consumers. But the secret lies in the CPU of the mobile device, which is why Qualcomm is constantly working on a way to perfect this. That way they can gain more partnerships with smartphone companies that would be willing to put Qualcomm’s chips into their devices.
Qualcomm is looking to make a comeback in the chip technology market. Rumors suggest they have already lost their partnership with Samsung, which is a major mobile technology maker. Qualcomm simply cannot afford to lose any more major partnerships or else it could be the end of their operations. But for now, things are looking very good with the news about their Hexagon 680 chip. As long as another chip company doesn’t come along and create something similar. Qualcomm’s chips should be around for years to come.
The new Google smartphone “Ara” has been delayed by the company until later this year. The delay is most blamed on iterations in its design quality. As you may know, the Google Ara is going to be a modular smartphone. This means that users will be able to put together parts on the phone or replace parts that break without having to get technical support. For example, if you were to drop your smartphone onto the ground and the screen got cracked, normally you would have to send the smartphone back to the manufacturer under a warranty and they would fix it for you. With the Google Ara modular smartphone, users will be able to replace the screen on their own. All they will have to do is slide out the old screen and slide in a new screen. It will be significantly cheaper to just purchase a spare screen than it would be to fix or replace an entire phone. If this modular smartphone were to be released, it would help people out in so many ways. People who purchase $500 smartphones will no longer have to worry about dropping their phone or spilling something on it. Users will also be able to upgrade their phone by simply replacing older parts with newer parts. Then they won’t have to go out and purchase a whole new phone just to get simple upgrades on things like cameras, speakers and so on.
Google originally had planned to give a trial run for its modular smartphone, nicknamed Project Ara. The trial was supposed to be done in Puerto Rico during the fall of 2015, but the Project Ara team decided that it would be better to choose a different location in the United States. All of this was announced in a series of recent tweets published by the heads of this project over at Google. The project is still going to be completed, but just at a later date. Obviously, consumers are very interested in this new smartphone style that has never been seen before. Once it does get released, it is predicted to have more sales than the newest Apple iPhone. The only question is, “What will the features be on the smartphone?” Even though you can take parts off and put new ones on, will the parts be powerful to run the phone or will they be substandard? Consumers and critics still have questions like these that are bound to get answered in the future.
When consumers make the choice to purchase a camera, they often have to ask themselves if they would rather have a high quality camera of average size or a smaller camera that produces less quality. The tech company, GoPro, has the reputation of making very small digital cameras. The Hero4 Session is their newest camera and it is only the size of an ice cube. It is also half the size of the last camera released by GoPro. This has consumers asking the question, “Why make it this small?” Well for one thing, it makes a great spy camera. But this wasn’t even its intended purpose. In this age of selfies and YouTube video production, people want to capture their daily lives anyway possible. This GoPro camera allows someone to simply stick it on the spokes of their bike, wear as a necklace around their neck or hang it on the end of a fishing pole. There are actually a lot of creative uses that one can have with a camera this small.
The Hero4 Session camera went on sale on July 12th of this year. The retail price for the device was about $400, which happens to be the same price as the Apple Watch. These are two devices that consumers may not necessarily run out in purchase because of their hefty price tags. Not only that, they don’t have that much use for the small functionality to make it worth the price. Of course, if you are a documentary filmmaker or if you make a living off making YouTube videos, then sure you can get creative with this camera. But if you are just a curious consumer that wants to try out a few pictures with the Hero4, then you might want to wait until the price goes down. Remember this camera doesn’t have the best quality either. It still takes high resolution video, but you could get a much better quality camera that is a little bigger for the same price. Plus the camera can only record up to 2 hours of video and it takes about 90 minutes to charge. It is also easy to break or lose because of how small it is. That is why you really need to have a purpose for purchasing this camera if you are going to invest $400 into it. Otherwise, it is probably a good idea to just wait until the asking price drops considerably.
When you buy an Apple smartphone you will notice it comes with lots of preloaded apps and music. Apple Music is a preloaded app that comes with new smartphones, which some people like and some people don’t. But the annoying thing is that you cannot delete Apple Music off of your phone. Many consumers feel that Apple should let iPhone users delete any app they want, even the preloaded ones. A little while back there was another massive series of complaints similar to this one about the mandatory iOS update that put the Watch app onto people’s iPhones. The Watch app is specifically designed to work with the Apple Watch, which is a separate device that not everybody owns or wants to own. This didn’t matter though because all the iPhone users were forced to receive this app on their phone. Many felt it was Apple’s way of promoting their smartwatch to iPhone users, so they would go out and purchase it. Whether this is true or not, users feel they should have the right to choose which apps they have on their phone. Right now they are only able to place these apps in the “Junk Drawer,” but the problem is this junk drawer can fill up fast and it still takes up memory on your phone.
So what is Apple’s agenda with making people have Apple Music on their phone? Some critics claim it is Apple’s way of keeping mobile users loyal to everything that is Apple. For example, Apple Music and Apple Maps are the alternatives to Spotify and Google Maps. Even though iPhone users have the freedom to download Google Maps and Spotify apps, Apple may not want their consumers using major apps made by other companies. They want to keep everything Apple, so that consumers stay loyal to the company in every respect. In other words, Apple can dominate the app marketplace by forcing their iPhone users to keep Apple apps of all kinds on their phone. The problem here is that many users of these apps do not like them. Apple Maps is a perfect example because it got terrible reviews by Apple users when it was released back in 2012. So why should people be forced to keep it on their phone if they don’t like it? Hopefully, Apple will hear these complaints from consumers and do something about it in the future. Perhaps they will release another iOS update that allows people to delete these apps. Users shouldn’t have to wait for a new iPhone release to do this simple task.
