Broadcom showcased their new breakthrough Gigabit 802.11ac chips at CES last week. These are 5th generation (5G) processors that promise “Near Instantaneous Data Synch”, improved wireless range and stable wireless streaming of videos in HD and of course the speed. IEEE 802.11ac offers speeds of 3 times to 6 times that of 802.11n WiFi solution.
With better range these chips allow more devices connected and farther apart than we have been used to. With faster downloading of files we can expect significant power consumption as well.
Broadcom BCM4360 5G WiFi chip offers 3-stream 802.11ac with speeds up to 1.3 Gbps, BCM4352 (for PCIe ) and BCM43526 (for USB) reach up to 867 Mbps and uses 2-stream 802.11ac specification. Finally BCM43516 is for USB with up to 433 Mbps and single-stream 802.11ac. All Broadcom 5G WiFi chips are compatible with Wi-Fi Direct, Bluetooth and NFC technologies. They’re built on 40nm technology.

Broadcom also shows off their new TV decoder utilizing special coding compression offering twice the download speed while reducing the bandwidth. Broadcom BCM7445 decoder improves picture quality of HD TV; it offers picture quality of 4 times the 1080p screen resolution.
