Smartphones on CES 2012
Smartphones are a rapidly-evolving category at the CES 2012 and in the wider world in general as the boundaries between small tablets (we’re thinking 5-inchers FROM) and outsized Android handset displays (Galaxy Note, HTC Titan) begin to overlap, all the more so since Ice Cream Sandwich arrived, since the format-independent platform means there is effectively no difference in UI between phones and slates.
Last year the Motorola Atrix 4G, complete with keyboard dock, was a much talked-about device Tech experts are eagerly awaiting the Huawei P1 S, complete with Ice Cream Sandwich. A significant feature of the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show was the arrival of dualcore smartphones – the Motorola Atrix and Droid Bionic were rivalled by LG Optimus 2X, and numerous other manufacturers followed suit as the year went on, but so far there has not been a quad-core phone.
Fujitsu brought in their F-07D, the worlds thinnest smartphone 6.7mm thin. It sports 1.4GHz single core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor and it runs Android 2.3.5 OS.
Samsung has shown off their newest Infuse 4G running bit dated Android 2.2 Froyo OS. 4.5-inch Super AMOLED display however is impressive. Infuse 4G was undoubtedly produced to offer a cheaper version of Galaxy S2.
Sony showed off their Xperia S smartphone run by 1.5 GHz dual-core chip and Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS (ICS is too come in short order). Xperia S also sports nice 12MP camera. Sony also had ION LT28at with 4.55-inch and same processor and 13MP camera.
Motorola also showcased Defy Mini at this year’s CES. Defy Mini is a cute and simple android smartphone at a good price point. It’s also dust-proof and waterproof.
LG showcased their Spectrum 4G running Ice Cream Sandwich Android 4.0 OS.
Lenovo brought in its Racer-A K800 with 1.6GHz dual-core Intel Medfield processor and Gingerbread OS.
Viesonic made appearance with their new budget smartphone, ViewPhone 3. ViewPhone 3 is dual-SIM and dual-boot (Windows 7 and Android 2.3 Gingerbread) smartphone running on 800 MHz Cortex A8 processor. It has sufficient 5MP camera. Connectivity is taken care of HSDPA, WiFi and Bluetooth
In the last couple of months there have been whispers of an HTC handset sporting the new 1.5GHz quad-core NVidia Tegra 3, which (if true) would be clocked at a higher frequency than the Transformer Prime 1.3GHz quad-core chip. October’s Nokia World brought users the Lumia 800, repackaged as the Lumia 900 for the States, the first Nokia Lumia 900 offering Window Phone 7 as its OS. Nokia is allegedly testing out LTE devices for Verizon and AT&T, and LTE would give Windows Phone 7 a welcome boost as it struggles to compete with the loyal Apple following and the exploding Android market.
What Windows Phone 7 needs is some support from manufacturers and carriers double-quick, otherwise Microsoft’s foray into the mobile phone market could end up like the ill-fated WebOS as it falls by the wayside.
New budget Windows Phone made appearance at the CES from ZTE. ZTE Tania packs 1GHz processor, 5MP camera and microSD card slot.
Plenty of people are keen to hear if AT&T will extend its LTE network and also when we can expect to see more 4G handsets such as the LG Nitro HD. Verizon has kept a low profile approaching CES 2012, although it is expected to announce new cities on its enormous LTE network Sprint has also played down any role at CES 2012, though may reveal details of its eagerly-awaited LTE network and devices.
