NVidia GPUs – new and old

Last week saw the arrival of a new wave of NVidia notebook GPUs, and the company has now published benchmark results comparing the last-gen GeForce 500M laptop graphics cards and the new 600M series. In addition NVidia has launched a new website version of GeForce.com, an online community for GeForce gamers.

At the unveiling of the new 600M series, NVidia boasted of how efficient the new series of notebook GPUs runs, meaning better frame rates and battery life , and the company also praised the reduced heat and noise of the latest chips, paving the way for even thinner notebooks, and GPUs in ultrabooks. The new Acer Aspire Timeline Ultra M3 features one of the first 600M cards to hit the market.

Now NVidia has detailed the step-up in frame rates between the entry-level GeForce GT520M and newer GT620M – in Deus Ex Human revolution the next-gen GPU achieved double – yes double!! – the frame rates of the older card. That’s a significant boost for any machines launching with NVidia’s baseline notebook graphics card. For power efficiency statistics, the new Timeline Ultra M3 was put up against a 2011 Alienware M15x, where the Ultra M3 lasted 8 hours compared with the Alienware’s 3 hours. Just how fair a comparison that is remains to be seen, but the difference seems to be significant nonetheless.

NVidia’s new site GeForce offers one-click downloads of the latest graphic card drivers, for the latest tweaks to performance.
