Motorola Xoom will run at $800, 1 month commitment for WiFi
Motorola Xoom is the latest offering of the brand implementing the latest Google Honeycomb. This is the very first one to be released using the latest Android version and it has been gaining a lot of buzz since its introduction at last month’s CES event. The company has not actually released an official pricing list for the launch which will happen in a couple of weeks however, information has been leaking and it is quite mortifying. According to the Best Buy ad that was leaked, the Motorola Zoom will start setting at around $800 on the 24th of February.
When it gets released on that data, the Motorola Xoom will not be a WiFi only tablet so that means you have to pay full price to receive a 3G connectivity even if you really do not want to go with Verizon. According to the ad that was leaked, you have to pay a month of Verizon wireless service in order to activate the WiFi function of the Xoom. Of course, you have to be guided that this is not an official ad and it might as well be a fake. Some have pointed out that there are some typographical errors on the copy. However, typos are not enough to consider it as a fake as errors in ads happen all the time even in other products.
Now, the question is if the Motorola Xoom is actually worth that steep price. For a number of experts, it might be a fair deal after all. The Motorola Xoom uses a dual core processor and it boasts of a higher screen resolution compared to the specs of iPad. In addition, the Xoom uses 2 cameras, one up front and the other on the rear. You can record and playback video in HD and most importantly, you can upgrade this one to 4G connectivity if you wish. So right now, the comparison is between the current iPad model with 3G and 32GB. In most aspects, the Xoom is far more worthy of the price since iPad is at $700+ with very little additional cost if you look at the Motorola Xoom.
Of course another question is that the iPad 2 will be revealed in a matter of months so that is another aspect to consider, given that specs on the new iPad will be released soon or even a glimpse of it. Another issue that is plaguing this rumored price is that a lot are thinking that it is priced too high and with that, Xoom is already a failure. That is to say, the iPad is really at the same price level when it first came into being. One of the bigger reasons for this reason is that Apple surprised the world by not offering an insanely sky scraping price tag. The fact is Apple is all on high end level, offering a mere desktop model without a display for more than $600 where you can go to a Windows counter and find a decent device to work with for $300.
When a competitor strikes Apple, everybody is expecting that the price battle is on. Not this time. Apple is not that high into the price range as it would normally fare and that is a really tough act to beat if you want to add better features for a much better tablet. Now, that is the aspect that many emerging companies are banking on. If you cannot beat the price, beat the features and that is what they are offering. Still, it is this issue of timing that makes the $800 price of Motorola Xoom a hard sell for many. Soon enough the 32GB version of iPad will be priced even lower and the Xoom will still cling on the higher price. It will be practical for many network providers to subsidize Motorola Xoom which happened with the Samsung Galaxy Tab.
