LG Launches LG Cloud

LG has just unveiled its own cloud storage service, LG CLoud, which will allow users to shunt content to and from between smartphones, tablets, PCs, and smart TVs.

The LG CLoud utilises LG’s Real-time Streaming Transcoding technology to execute server-side media conversion to suit whatever device a user is currently using. So a full HD movie you wanted to stream to a smartphone would first be trimmed down to the best rendition of HD possible for that particular smartphone resolution, and dare we suggest, even color spectrum, so that precious bandwidth (for you and the network) would be saved.

It’s an interesting development to see cloud storage providers optimising their services in device-specific ways. Presumably the privileged access hardware manufacturers could have (with user permission of course) to the specifics of devices would enable them to optimise their cloud software for the relatively limited number of devices that might use it. Always-online connections should mean that even if cloud services are provided for all to use, those users who own LG tablets or handsets should find the fastest service with their own manufacturer’s cloud solution. And that’s a useful trick for hardware companies to have at their disposal in an increasingly competitive cloud-storage market.

LG CLoud uses streaming instead of downloading so that playback can start as soon as possible. LG Cloud is rolling out now, beginning in Korea, with 5GB free space for users, and 50GB extra storage for buyers of LG phones or smart TVs.
