Zenithink Upgrades Tablets To ICS
Zenithink has released Android 4.0 for its recent 7- and 10-inch tablets. The Zenithink C71 is amongst those updated to run the latest version of the Google operating system. It came to Westerrn attention recently when it was announced that it would be the basis of the new Spark tablet, which will run the (non-Android) tablet-optimized version of Linux, KDE Plasma Active.
That open-source Spark slate will reach the shelves in May, but early adopters can already get hold of a Zenithink C71 for around $130. That version of the tablet runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread, though buyers can easily download and install Android Ice Cream Sandwich from Zenithink for an uncomplicated upgrade.
Really adventurous types can custom-build a Spark tablet by downloading and installing the Mer Linux distro and installing the KDE Plasma Active environment on top. The actual specs of the Zenithink C71 are pretty average for a budget slate – a 1GHz Amlogic 8726 Cortex-A9 processor coupled with 512MB RAM and 4GB storage space – the 7-inch display features a low-ish 800 x 480 resolution.
Zenithink does produce a C72 which gives a more compelling 1024 x 600 pixel screen, but it costs a bit more. Nevertheless the Zenithink is a great toy for anyone just starting out in the Android development field or a low-priced single-use Android slab – load it up with recipes or spreadsheets or whatever. Just don’t expect to run 3D games on it.
