Skytex – Budget Ice Cream Sandwich Tablets

SkyPad Argos

Skytex has expanded its line of budget Android tablets with a few new models running the latest Android Ice Cream Sandwich OS. Skytex will shortly offer an ICS update for its SkyPad Alpha 2 tablet, and will introduce the SkyPad Omega and the SkyPad Argos, both featuring a singlecore 1GHz CPU with integrated Mali 400 graphics, which supports 1080p HD video. Both pack in 8GB storage and both feature capacitive touchscreens with support for 5-point multitouch gestures.

The SkyPad Omega is equipped with an 8-inch 1024 x 768 pixel screen whereas the SkyPad Argos offers a 7-inch 1024 x 600 panel. But the star feature of the SkyPad Omega is that its battery is removable, something practically unheard-of amongst Android tablets. That could prove very useful once replacements go on sale.

The SkyPad Argos, on the other hand, has a removable back plate purely for cosmetic reasons – so you can customize the look of your slate with different coloured panels. Skytex aims to start shipping the Argos and Omega some time in Q2, with prices starting at around $199 for the SkyPad Argos.

Although a working prototype of the 7-inch Argos tablet was on display at CES 2012, the Omega as yet is still in design. But an 8-inch tablet Skytex was on show featured similar specifications, and performed pretty well.

Skytex came to the attention of the tech world last year with its Primer Pocket, a dirt-cheap real stinker of a device. Still, it is priced at under $100. Skytex’s new crop of Android tablets feature improved screens, better build quality, and faster CPUs. Skytex has clearly upped its game. Bravo!
