Amazon is a company that isn’t standing still right now. This week saw the launch of its Kindle Fire and Kindle Touch tablets, and Amazon Cloud storage goes from strength to strength. Recently they quietly bought up a speech recognition start-up named Yap, leading industry observers to speculate that Amazon plans to develop their own voice-controlled input system in answer to Siri, Apple’s hot new voice-activated app on the iPhone 4S. The Yap team have developed an app named Yap Voicemail, which they describe as “a voice recognition technology with a powerful intent engine to help you quickly complete the desired action.”

Amazon’s acquisition of Yap was a secret until writers at the CLT Blog unveiled an SEC filing. It details how Yap was merged with the company Dion Acquisition Sub Inc, before re-assuming its former name a few weeks later.  But the Seattle address for Yap is within the Amazon complex. Well we all know how the Kindle is far more than just an eReader, and here is further ‘proof’ that Amazon has its sights set on producing a viable alternative to the iPad 2 and other premium tablets.
