ASUS Eee Box EB1501P – Review

The compact ASUS Eee Box EB1501P is a multimedia box that offers Full 1080p HD multimedia and snappy multitasking execution, thanks to an Intel Atom D525 dual-core CPU and next-gen NVidia Ion graphics.

The Eee Box is roughly the size of a paperback novel and uses 70% less power than the average desktop. The 1.8Ghz dual-core processor is paired with 512MB dedicated VRAM NVidia Ion graphics capability, all supported by 2GB dual channel 1333Mhz DDR3 RAM, expandable to 4GB. For storage the ASUS Eee Box EB1501P offers a 320GB 5400rpm hard drive.

Port-wise, Asus have provided HDMI and VGA sockets, an eSata port, 2 USB 3.0 sockets and 4 USB 2 ports, WiFi-n, a VESA mounting bracket and Energy Start and EPEAT, and a wireless keyboard and mouse are thrown in too. The Asus Eee Box measures a cute 7.6 x 7.6 x 1.53 inches, hence the ‘Box’ nomenclature. It weighs a weedy 2.64 lb.

VESA mount enables the Eee Box to fit snugly behind a monitor in either the home or office, eliminating any ‘cable bolognese’.The ASUS Eee Box EB1501P is fully convertible to a multimedia hub if you connect to an HDTV for hi-def visuals and 5.1 channel surround-sound. The USB 3.0 ports enables devices to be charged super-quickly and of course greatly speed up data transfer, GM is glad to see a pair of the new hi-speed sockets, which gives more flexibilty (ie speed) to the user.

The Asus comes complete with wireless keyboard and mouse and also a remote control for the full multimedia experience. The OS is Windows 7 Home Premium.

Socketside Asus gives users a 5-in-1 SD card reader, an S/PDIF audio out socket, an eSata port,

HDMI and VGA ports and good old headphone and mic jacks. The Slot-in Super Multi-DVD drive allows you to play your favorite movies The ASUS Eee Box EB1501P features seamless Full 1080p HD playback, and the core spec empowers multitasking at a brisk rate.

HDMI connectivity allows high quality video and audio through compatible HDTVs or external displays.The Eee Box’s Super Multi DVD/RW Drive should keep media buffs happy enough.

NVidia’s Ion CUDA technology allows demanding apps to be accelerated. Flash 10.1 support means web streaming sites can be enjoyed with smooth HD playback. High Speed Gigabit LAN means faster downloads and more reliable networking.

With the ASUS Eee Box EB1501P, it’s goodbye to masses of tangled cords and bulky desktop machines – the VESA-mountable case enables the magazine-sized Eee Box to be easily fastened to a compatible HDTV or display. The tilt-up design allows you to load CDs and DVDs easily when mounted, but for users its the uncomplicated design that is most deserving of praise. Others will be taken by the 70% energy savings compared to the average desktop computer, yet there is no compromise on performance.The ASUS Eee Box EB1501P has been awarded the EPEAT Gold certification – the highest standard for environmentally-friendly tech design.
